8:30 – 8:35 Welcome – Dr. Cheryl Dye, CU Gerontology Research Collaborative

8:35 – 9:15 Aging Issues in South Carolina – Ms. Cornelia Gibbons, Director, SC Office on Aging

9:15 – 9:30 Break

9:30 – 10:15 Dr. Laura Gitlin – Professor, Thomas Jefferson University, Recipient of National Institute on Aging Geriatric Academic Career Leadership award for her research program to promote optimal aging in place, and Director of Center for Applied Research on Aging and Health. The Center’s focus is on research in community and home-based health and human services for elderly and their caregivers to enable successful aging in place among diverse populations

10:15 – 10:30 Questions

10:30-11:00 Dr. Harvey Sterns – Professor, The University of Akron, Director and Senior Fellow of the Institute for Life-Span Development and Gerontology. His current research includes training of adult and older adult workers, personality factors, and retirement adjustment and satisfaction, as well as personality factors in housing choices in retirement.

11:00 – 10:15 Questions

11:15 – 11:45 Dr. Stephen Golant – Professor, University of Florida. Current research includes examining the housing, neighborhood, and community needs of the U.S. elderly population; the strengths and weaknesses of alternative shelter and care settings; the supportive service needs of low-income seniors in rent-subsidized housing; residential location and migration patterns of elderly; and transportation problems and behaviors of older persons.

12:00 – 1:30 Lunch

1:30 – 2:15 Developing Community and CU partnerships
• How the business community can facilitate aging in place – Mr. Paul Franklin, Founder, South Carolina Aging in Place Coalition and member of the National Aging in Place Council
• Funding opportunities for Community Campus partnerships to promote aging in place

2:15 – 3:15 Participants will break out to discuss aging in place around themes of built environment, personal factors and support services, and how they may want to partner with Clemson University

3:15 – 4:00 Break-out groups will present results of break-out sessions and discuss next steps for how CU faculty can partner with community organizations to facilitate aging in place in South Carolina
