Examination of Individual and Organizational Factors that Influence Workplace Perceptions held by Employees with Disabilities

Description of the research and your participation

You are invited to participate in a research study conducted by Michael Horvath and Jessica Bradley. The purpose of this research is to explore what factors influence perceptions of discrimination held by employees with disabilities. Additionally, we would like to determine what variables might make an individual with a disability more or less likely to request a workplace accommodation in the future. You will be asked to complete the following survey containing items referring to your disability and to your treatment in the workplace as well as demographic information (e.g., age, gender) and a few knowledge-based questions.

The amount of time required for your participation should be approximately 20 minutes if you are using a mouse and approximately 60 minutes if you are using a keyboard.

Risks and discomforts

There are no known risks associated with this research.

Potential benefits

This research has the potential to help organizations understand how employees with disabilities feel and what leads to employees perceiving discrimination in the workplace. Also, we want to determine what factors increase the likelihood that an individual with a disability will request an accommodation so we can better prepare job applicants and employees with disabilities. By participating, you can be entered into a lottery where 20% of participants will win $10.00, unless more than 250 participants enter and then 50 will be randomly chosen as winners.

Protection of confidentiality

No information that can identify you or that can link your responses to you will be obtained. As a result neither the investigators nor anyone else will be able to identify you and/or any of your responses to the survey items. If you choose to be entered into the lottery, you will need to email one of the researchers so your participation will be temporarily known so winners can be selected and receive the money. At the end of the study, all email addresses collected from participants will be deleted and no one but the researchers will ever know you participated. Also, there will be no way at any time to link your identity to your responses on the survey so your answers will remain completely anonymous from the time you submit your survey.

Voluntary participation

Your participation in this research study is voluntary. You may choose not to participate and you may withdraw your consent to participate at any time. You will not be penalized in any way should you decide not to participate or to withdraw from this study.
