IMSA faculty and student participants are drawn from its three departmental partners - Architecture, Electrical & Computing Engineering, and Materials Science & Engineering - as well as Human Factors Psychology, Education, Sociology and other allied fields.

IMSA engages students at all levels, from freshman-honors undergraduates of the EUREKA Summer Research Experience, to Post-Doctoral Students. IMSA offers participating students a novel, trans-disciplinary education responsive to the challenges and opportunities of a complex world. IMSA also partners with Research Centers and Institutes including those within the Greenville Hospital System, the Clemson Restoration Institute, the Sonoco Institute of Packaging and the National Brick Research Center.
