IMSA is a Clemson University Research Group focusing on the design, development and evaluation of intelligent materials and systems for architecture. Partnering Architecture, Materials Science & Engineering, and Electrical & Computing Engineering, IMSA is responsive to the challenges and opportunities of a complex world: human well-being, dramatic swings in demographics, sustainability, and an increasingly digital home, school, workplace, healthcare setting and city.

IMSA aspires to realize an ANIMATED ARCHITECTURE. An ANIMATED  ARCHITECTURE behaves more like living things. It strives to accommodate the dynamic and wide-ranging desires and concerns associated with the built and natural environments for clients and territories often overlooked by designers.

IMSA was founded by faculty directors Keith Evan Green (Architecture), Michael Ellison (MSE), and Ian Walker (ECE), Participants in IMSA strive to cultivate a productive, satisfying and dynamic equilibrium across people, nature and artifice.
